Chapter 16 - The Apartment Door
Madison saw Daniel through the security camera.
She called police before opening the door.
He pounded hard enough to shake the frame.
“You ruined me!”
Madison spoke through the intercom.
“You ruined yourself.”
“You recorded private conversations.”
“You forged documents using my computer.”
“You helped me!”
“That’s why I’m cooperating.”
Daniel kicked the door.
The wood split near the lock.
Police arrived as he forced his shoulder against it.
They arrested him for violating bond conditions, intimidation, and attempted forced entry.
Inside the apartment, Madison was shaking.
For the first time, she understood how Caroline had lived.
She called Lena.
“I want to give Caroline everything.”
The evidence included recordings proving Patricia knew about the forged loans.
It also included a video filmed in Noah’s former bedroom.
Daniel stood beside the empty space where the bed had been.
Madison asked, “What if Noah cries?”
Daniel replied, “Good. Caroline will lose control when she sees him upset.”
The room conversion had not been careless cruelty.
It had been staged psychological provocation.
They wanted Caroline to scream, break objects, or strike Madison.
They planned to record her reaction and seek emergency custody.
Caroline watched the video once.
Then she closed the laptop.
Rachel asked whether she was all right.
“No.”
