Chapter 3 - Caroline’s Real Home

Caroline drove two hours north to a small white house near Lake Erie.
Noah slept in the back seat with his teddy bear beneath his chin.
When she turned into the driveway, porch lights came on.
Her older sister, Rachel, ran outside without a coat.
She opened the car door and pulled Caroline into her arms.
“You finally left.”
Caroline began crying for the first time.
Not because she regretted leaving.
Because someone had been waiting for her to do it.
Rachel helped carry Noah inside.
A small guest room had already been prepared.
Blue sheets.
A night-light.
A row of children’s books.
Noah looked around cautiously.
“Is this my room?”
“For as long as you need it,” Rachel said.
He placed his teddy bear on the pillow.
Caroline sat beside him.
“I’m sorry about your real room.”
Noah frowned.
“This feels more real.”
The words nearly broke her again.
After he slept, Rachel made tea.
“How long has Madison been living there?”
“Daniel said she was using the guest suite while her apartment was renovated.”
“And you believed him?”
“No.”
Caroline opened her laptop.
For six months, she had been collecting financial statements.
Daniel had withdrawn money from their joint account to pay Madison’s rent, jewelry, travel, and clothing.
He had also transferred $240,000 from an education account created for Noah.
Rachel stared at the screen.
“He stole from his son?”
“He called it a temporary business loan.”
“Did you authorize it?”
“No.”
Caroline clicked another folder.
Inside were copies of company documents bearing her forged signature.
Daniel had used her identity to guarantee loans.
If his business collapsed, creditors could come after her.
Rachel looked at her.
“You didn’t just leave a cheating husband.”
Caroline’s face hardened.
