Chapter 24 - Returning for the Stars
The family house was sold under court supervision.
Before closing, Noah asked to visit.
Caroline worried it would hurt him.
Melissa, the child advocate, said returning could help if Noah controlled the experience.
They entered together.
The house smelled empty.
Madison’s dressing shelves remained in his former bedroom, but the handbags and dresses were gone.
Noah stood in the doorway holding his teddy bear.
“This was mine.”
“Yes.”
“Can I take the stars?”
Most had been painted over.
A few still glowed faintly near the ceiling vent.
Caroline brought a ladder.
Together, they peeled away every surviving star.
Noah found his name written behind the old bed frame.
CAROLINE + DANIEL’S LITTLE STAR.
Daniel had written it before Noah was born.
Noah traced the words.
“Did Dad love me then?”
Caroline answered honestly.
“I believe he did in the ways he knew how. But love without respect can still hurt people.”
Noah removed the paper label and placed it in his pocket.
He did not want to destroy every memory.
He wanted to choose which ones came with him.
Before leaving, he set the teddy bear briefly in the center of the empty room.
“Goodbye,” he whispered.
Then he picked it up again.
Outside, Caroline handed the keys to the receiver.
She did not look back.
The house had contained her marriage.
