Chapter 4 - Madison’s Victory
Madison celebrated too early.
The morning after Caroline left, she ate breakfast at Caroline’s kitchen island wearing Daniel’s robe.
“This house feels different now,” she said.
Daniel barely touched his coffee.
His phone showed twenty-three unanswered calls to Caroline.
Madison leaned across the counter.
“She’ll come back once she gets tired of playing victim.”
“She filed for divorce.”
Madison paused.
“People file papers when they want attention.”
“These were prepared before yesterday.”
The smugness left her face for a moment.
Daniel had never told Madison that Caroline already suspected the financial fraud.
He had described his wife as passive, dependent, and afraid to live alone.
That description made Madison comfortable.
She believed she had replaced someone weak.
Daniel opened his banking app.
The joint checking account had been frozen.
So had a home-equity line.
He called his bank manager.
“Mr. Mercer, your spouse submitted a fraud dispute concerning several transfers.”
“What transfers?”
“The ones made under her electronic authorization.”
Daniel glanced toward Madison.
The bank manager continued.
“Mrs. Mercer states she did not sign them.”
Daniel ended the call.
Madison crossed her arms.
“Why are you looking at me?”
“Did you use Caroline’s tablet to approve payments?”
“You told me to.”
“I told you to pay invoices.”
“You gave me her password.”
Daniel felt the first wave of genuine panic.
If Madison admitted accessing Caroline’s accounts, the fraud could be traced directly to both of them.
The doorbell rang.
A process server stood outside.
He handed Daniel legal papers.
Temporary financial restraints.
A custody petition.
And an order preventing Madison from entering any part of the home designated for Noah.
Madison read the order over his shoulder.
“She can’t tell me where to stand.”
Daniel looked toward the converted bedroom.
