Chapter 18 - The Brothers
Noah and Caleb met every Saturday.
At first, they spoke mostly about toys and school.
Then the questions became harder.
“Did Dad come to your birthdays?” Noah asked.
“Sometimes,” Caleb said. “He told me not to post pictures.”
“Did you know about me?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know how.”
Noah accepted the answer more easily than the adults expected.
The boys were not responsible for Daniel’s lies.
Erin and Caroline slowly built trust too.
They compared messages and timelines.
Daniel had told each woman the other was unstable.
He used the same phrases.
The same apologies.
The same promises.
Caroline felt embarrassed by how familiar every lie sounded.
Erin shook her head.
“He practiced on both of us.”
Together, they filed a child-support and asset-concealment claim.
Daniel had hidden income to reduce what he paid Caleb while spending freely on Madison.
Patricia pressured Erin to drop the case.
“She said Caleb would be blamed for destroying the family,” Erin said.
Caroline replied, “There was never one family to destroy. Daniel created separate rooms and lied in all of them.”
The judge ordered funds preserved for both boys.
Noah’s stolen education money would be restored through asset sales.
Caleb would receive overdue support.
During a visit, Caleb asked whether he could see Noah’s new room when it was finished.
Noah smiled.
