Chapter 5 - The First Hearing

Caroline entered family court wearing the same navy cardigan she had worn the day she left.
Daniel arrived in a tailored gray suit.
Madison sat behind him in a cream dress, as though she had been invited to a business luncheon.
Judge Amelia Price studied the photographs of Noah’s room.
“Mr. Mercer, where was your son sleeping after his bedroom was converted?”
Daniel cleared his throat.
“The guest room.”
Caroline’s attorney, Lena Brooks, placed another photograph on the screen.
The guest room contained Madison’s luggage and cosmetics.
“Was there a bed available for Noah?” Lena asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“There was a sofa in my office.”
Judge Price looked at him over her glasses.
“You removed a seven-year-old child’s bed to create a luxury dressing room for your girlfriend?”
“She is a family friend.”
Caroline almost laughed.
Lena displayed messages between Daniel and Madison.
Can’t wait until the little prince’s room is finally ours.
Daniel had replied:
After this weekend. Caroline won’t fight me.
The courtroom became silent.
Judge Price granted Caroline temporary primary custody.
Daniel received supervised visits until a child advocate reviewed the home.
He stood quickly.
“You’re punishing me over furniture?”
The judge’s voice turned cold.
“No. I am responding to your decision to demonstrate that your child’s security ranked below another adult’s wardrobe.”
Outside the courtroom, Daniel grabbed Caroline’s arm.
“You’re humiliating me.”
She pulled free.
“You humiliated Noah.”
Madison approached.
“This isn’t over.”
Caroline looked directly at her.
“You’re right.”
