Chapter 21 - The Wedding Was a Deal
Madison’s final recording dated back three years.
Daniel was drunk in a hotel suite.
He complained that Caroline wanted another child.
“I never wanted the first one,” he said.
Madison laughed nervously.
“Then why marry her?”
“Her parents offered startup money. Her trust made banks take me seriously.”
“Did you ever love her?”
“I loved what she made possible.”
Caroline listened from the prosecution table.
Her face remained calm.
Inside, eleven years of memories rearranged themselves.
The proposal after her father approved the investment.
The rushed wedding.
Daniel insisting on joint financial access.
The pressure to leave her job.
Love had existed for her.
For him, marriage had been a business structure.
The recording continued.
Madison asked why he had not divorced Caroline sooner.
Daniel answered:
The trust stays hers unless I prove she is incapable. Once I control Noah, I control the path to it.
The courtroom reacted audibly.
Daniel lowered his head.
His attorney requested a mistrial.
Denied.
Noah had not been a son in Daniel’s plan.
He had been a legal bridge to Caroline’s inheritance.
The prosecutor rested her case.
Outside court, Rachel hugged Caroline.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For every time I told you to give him another chance.”
Caroline looked through the courthouse windows.
“I gave myself enough chances. That’s what matters now.”
