Chapter 11 - Patricia’s House

Patricia Mercer arrived at Caroline’s sister’s home without warning.

Rachel almost closed the door.

Caroline stopped her.

Patricia looked immaculate in a camel coat.

“I came to discuss the boys.”

“Which boys?” Caroline asked.

Patricia flinched.

She had known about Caleb since his birth.

She helped Daniel hide child-support payments.

She also encouraged him to remain married to Caroline because of her family’s money.

“Divorce would have destroyed the company,” Patricia said.

“So you let me live inside a lie.”

“I protected my son.”

“No. You protected what he bought you.”

The secret house belonged to Patricia through a shell company financed by loans bearing Caroline’s forged signature.

Patricia insisted she did not know.

Caroline showed her the documents.

Her name appeared on the purchase agreement.

“You signed this.”

“Daniel said it was estate planning.”

“You never asked whose estate?”

Patricia’s expression hardened.

“You are trying to turn Noah against his father.”

“Daniel did that when he removed his bed.”

Patricia lowered her voice.

“A boy needs his father.”

“A boy needs safety.”

Before leaving, Patricia threatened to pursue grandparent visitation.

Caroline answered calmly.

“Then the court will review your role in concealing financial fraud and another child.”

Patricia’s posture changed.

For decades, she had controlled people through shame.

Now shame belonged to her.

That evening, Erin called.

Caleb had disappeared from school pickup.
