Chapter 25 - Two Beds, One Constellation

Caroline renovated the lake house slowly.
No designer showroom.
No rooms built to impress strangers.
No locked doors.
Noah chose deep-blue walls.
Caleb helped build two wooden beds.
One was Noah’s.
The other was for sleepovers.
They placed glow-in-the-dark stars across the ceiling.
Instead of a random pattern, they created two constellations connected by a bright line.
“Brothers,” Caleb said.
Noah added a third small star near the window.
“That one is Mom.”
Caroline pretended not to cry.
Erin joined them for dinner.
The relationship between the two mothers was not always easy.
There were years of pain between their stories.
But neither blamed the other for Daniel’s choices.
They created a schedule allowing the boys to spend time together without pressure.
Caleb stopped feeling hidden.
Noah stopped feeling replaced.
Rachel joked that Caroline had accidentally built a new family from the pieces Daniel tried to separate.
Caroline answered, “Not accidentally.”
She was choosing every part of it.
Meanwhile, Madison began serving a three-year sentence after returning assets and cooperating.
Patricia faced sentencing.
Daniel’s was scheduled for the following week.
Noah did not want to attend.
Caroline supported him.
He asked her to read a letter instead.
It contained only four sentences.

Dad, I loved you before I understood what you did. I still remember good things. But I need you to stop blaming Mom. My room was not the only thing you took.
👉 Noah would not face Daniel in court—but his words reached his father more deeply than any prison sentence could.
