Chapter 20 - Caroline Takes the Stand
The criminal trial filled the courthouse.
Former clients.
Bank officers.
Employees.
Families whose homes had never been built.
Caroline walked to the witness stand without looking at Daniel.
The prosecutor asked how Mercer Development started.
“With money from my parents and unpaid work from me.”
“Did Mr. Mercer describe you publicly as a founder?”
“In the beginning.”
“When did that change?”
“After I became financially dependent on him.”
She explained the forged guarantees.
The stolen education fund.
Madison’s access to her computer.
The bedroom trap.
Daniel’s attorney approached.
“You struck no one, correct?”
“Correct.”
“You suffered no physical violence?”
Caroline paused.
“Control does not become harmless because it leaves no bruise.”
The courtroom went still.
He suggested she left to gain advantage in divorce.
She answered, “I left after my son asked where his bed was.”
He showed photographs of her new lakefront home and implied she planned the separation for money.
“The house belongs to my family trust,” she said. “Daniel knew he could not legally access it. That is why he forged my signature.”
The attorney had no response.
During recess, Daniel stared at her across the hallway.
“You sound very brave now.”
Caroline met his eyes.
