Chapter 22 - The Verdict
The jury returned after eighteen hours.
Daniel was found guilty of bank fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, custodial interference, and theft from protected accounts.
Patricia was convicted on four conspiracy and fraud counts.
Madison had pleaded guilty earlier in exchange for testimony.
Daniel did not react until the clerk read the identity-theft verdict.
Then he looked at Caroline.
“This is your fault,” he mouthed.
She felt nothing move inside her.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Not love.
The judge revoked his bond immediately.
Deputies approached.
Daniel resisted.
“I need to speak to my son!”
Judge Price, observing from the gallery after completing the custody proceedings, looked away.
Noah had submitted a statement through his child advocate.
I want Dad to get help, but I don’t want him deciding where I sleep anymore.
Daniel was led out.
Patricia began sobbing.
Madison sat in another row, staring at the floor.
Outside, reporters surrounded Caroline.
“Do you feel vindicated?”
“I feel believed.”
“Do you hate your husband?”
“No.”
The answer surprised them.
Caroline continued.
“Hate would keep him in my home after he has already left it.”
The receivership announced that most victim deposits could now be repaid through recovered assets and insurance.
Ben and Marisol would finally receive funds to finish their daughter’s home.
But Caroline’s divorce was not yet complete.
