Chapter 17 - Noah Learns the Truth
Caroline wanted to protect Noah from the video.
The child advocate advised a simple, honest explanation.
“Children often blame themselves when adults hide too much.”
Caroline sat with Noah in Rachel’s living room.
“Dad and Madison changed your room because they wanted me to get very angry.”
Noah frowned.
“Why?”
“So they could tell people I wasn’t safe.”
“But you are safe.”
“I try to be.”
“Did Dad want me to be scared?”
Caroline’s throat tightened.
“He knew you might be upset.”
Noah looked at his teddy bear.
“That means yes.”
She did not contradict him.
He began crying silently.
Caroline pulled him into her arms.
“I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t take my room.”
“No. But I stayed longer than I should have.”
“Because you loved Dad?”
“Yes.”
“Do you still?”
Caroline considered the question carefully.
“I remember loving him. That isn’t the same as trusting him.”
Noah leaned against her.
“Can I have stars in my new room?”
“As many as you want.”
That night, they ordered hundreds of glow-in-the-dark stars.
Noah chose a constellation shaped like a bear.
Meanwhile, Caleb asked Erin whether he could meet Noah.
Both mothers agreed to a supervised meeting.
The boys sat awkwardly across from each other.
Then Caleb placed a toy race car on the table.
“My dad gave me this.”
Noah replied, “Our dad.”
