Chapter 29 - Will Dad Come?

Two years after leaving, Caroline hosted Noah’s ninth birthday at the lake house.
Caleb slept over the night before.
Rachel baked a crooked chocolate cake.
Erin brought balloons.
Children ran through the yard carrying water blasters.
Noah’s bedroom door remained open.
His two beds were covered with sleeping bags and toys.
Nothing looked elegant.
Everything looked lived in.
After the guests left, Noah sat with Caroline on the dock.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Do you remember when I asked if Dad would come with us?”
Caroline did.
The question had followed her through every hearing, every investigation, and every sleepless night.
“What do you think now?” she asked.
Noah looked across the lake.
“I think he couldn’t come because he wanted us to stay where he controlled everything.”
Caroline nodded.
“Maybe.”
“Do you think he misses us?”
“Yes.”
“Do you miss him?”
“Sometimes I miss who I believed he was.”
Noah leaned against her.
“I don’t miss that house.”
“Neither do I.”
He smiled.
“This is home.”
Later, Caroline entered his bedroom to turn off the lamp.
The glow-in-the-dark constellations covered the ceiling.
Two large patterns for the brothers.
One star near the window for her.
Noah had recently added a fourth.
She asked who it represented.

“Me,” he said. “Because I belong here too.”
👉 Noah no longer measured love by whether Daniel returned—he had finally learned that belonging could not be taken away with a bed.
