Chapter 10 - The Doctor’s Report

Evelyn demanded that Dr. Conrad Mills step forward.

He had attended the christening as a guest.

“This physician evaluated Isabella,” Evelyn announced. “She is not capable of managing a trust.”

Dr. Mills adjusted his tie.

“In my professional opinion, Mrs. Cross displays symptoms of severe postpartum psychosis.”

Isabella looked at him.

“When did you examine me?”

The doctor hesitated.

“We spoke informally.”

“Where?”

“At your home.”

“I have security recordings of every visitor to my home.”

Silence.

Helen handed Ramirez a copy of the report.

“It is dated three weeks before Noah was born.”

Guests began murmuring again.

Dr. Mills turned pale.

Jason glared at him.

Evelyn snapped, “The date was an administrative error.”

Helen continued.

“The report also refers to Mrs. Cross’s infant daughter.”

Isabella held Noah higher.

“My son.”

The doctor’s credibility vanished in seconds.

Ramirez asked him to remain for questioning.

Dr. Mills looked toward Jason.

“You said this was protected.”

Jason hissed, “Keep your mouth shut.”

The words were captured by microphones used for the christening speeches.

Ramirez’s expression sharpened.

Isabella watched Jason realize the ballroom itself had become a witness.

Then Helen presented a restraining order signed that afternoon.
