Chapter 26 - Jason’s Sentence
Jason stood before the judge in a gray jail uniform.
His navy tuxedo and arrogant smile were gone.
He received twenty-four years in prison.
The judge denied early release eligibility for the first sixteen years.
Before sentencing, Jason addressed Isabella.
“I am sorry.”
She looked at him without responding.
“I know that doesn’t repair anything.”
It was the first true sentence he had spoken without manipulation.
“I used your love as evidence against you. I used our son as leverage. I hurt your mother because I thought humiliation made me powerful.”
Isabella stood when permitted.
“You were powerful.”
Jason looked surprised.
“You had my trust, access to our home, and a child who would have loved you.”
Her voice remained steady.
“You traded real power for control.”
Jason began crying.
Isabella felt sadness.
Not longing.
Not forgiveness.
Only grief for the family he chose to destroy.
The judge ordered permanent financial restitution and prohibited unsupervised contact with Noah.
Any future relationship would depend on Noah’s wishes and professional review.
As deputies led Jason away, he looked back once.
Isabella did not.
Noah reached for Margaret’s pearl necklace instead.
