Thomas received forty years for kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud, and racketeering.
Before the sentence, Isabella asked to speak.
Thomas watched her with the detached curiosity of a stranger.
“You called me your daughter only when you wanted access to something.”
He smiled faintly.
“You inherited my intelligence.”
“No. I inherited Grandmother’s caution and Mom’s endurance.”
His smile disappeared.
“You could have had everything.”
“I do.”
She looked toward Margaret and Noah.
Thomas followed her gaze.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that the fortune was not the center of her victory.
“You failed because you believed people were possessions,” Isabella said. “Mom was not yours. I was not yours. Noah was never yours.”
Thomas received the maximum sentence allowed under the agreement.

Margaret did not speak to him.
