Chapter 27 - Evelyn’s Last Performance

Evelyn arrived in royal blue.

The same color she wore at the christening.

She wanted the courtroom to remember her as dignified.

The prosecutor described forty years of theft and manipulation.

Evelyn interrupted twice.

Finally, the judge asked whether she wished to speak.

Evelyn stood.

“Everything I did preserved businesses, jobs, and family assets.”

Margaret shook her head.

Evelyn pointed at her.

“She abandoned responsibility and played the victim.”

The judge warned her.

Evelyn continued.

“Isabella would have wasted the trust without guidance.”

Isabella rose only when invited.

“You never guided me.”

She looked directly at Evelyn.

“You studied my fears, selected my husband, falsified my health records, stole from my baby, and tried to separate us.”

Evelyn’s lips tightened.

“You slapped my son.”

“Yes.”

A murmur moved through the room.

“And I would still choose every legal step that followed over one more moment of silence.”

The judge sentenced Evelyn to thirty-one years.

Her assets were forfeited.

Her professional licenses were revoked.

As officers approached, Evelyn’s posture finally collapsed.

She turned to Jason across the courtroom.

He would not look at her.
