Chapter 13 - The Mother Who Stayed Silent

After the arrests, the ballroom emptied slowly.

Margaret sat with an ice pack against her hip.

Isabella knelt beside her.

“I should have protected you sooner.”

Margaret touched her daughter’s face.

“You were surviving your own house.”

“I believed them when they called you bitter.”

“I was bitter.”

“You had a reason.”

“Pain explains behavior. It doesn’t excuse everything.”

Margaret admitted she had hidden the full truth about the trust.

She feared Isabella would become a target.

Her secrecy created the exact vulnerability she wanted to prevent.

“If I had told you everything, you might have recognized Jason sooner.”

Isabella looked down at Noah.

“We both made choices from fear.”

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Then we stop.”

For the first time in years, Isabella rested her head against her mother’s shoulder.

Noah slept between them.

Helen returned with an update.

Jason’s attorneys had filed an emergency motion claiming the arrests were orchestrated by Isabella during a postpartum breakdown.

The court would hear the matter the next morning.

“He still thinks he can take control,” Margaret said.

Isabella stood.

“Then tomorrow, we finish this legally.”

Before leaving, a hotel employee handed Isabella a small envelope found beneath Evelyn’s chair.

Inside was a photograph of Jason meeting Thomas Vale, Isabella’s missing father.
