Chapter 29 - Noah’s Second Celebration

One year after the christening, the Grand Plaza ballroom looked different.
The chandeliers remained.
The marble floor still reflected the morning light.
But there were no towering displays built to impress strangers.
The room held employees, shelter families, advocates, and friends.
A new plaque stood near the entrance:
THE MARGARET FAIRMONT CENTER FOR FAMILY SAFETY AND FINANCIAL FREEDOM.
Margaret stared at it.
“You used my name without asking.”
Isabella smiled.
“I learned one bad habit from the family.”
Margaret laughed.
The sound carried across the ballroom.
Noah, now walking unsteadily, wore a cream sweater stitched from part of his old christening blanket.
He stumbled toward Margaret.
She knelt and opened her arms.
The same guests who once watched her fall now watched her lift her grandson.
Isabella stood beside them.
Helen announced that recovered funds had fully restored the trust and funded legal services for hundreds of families.
No one mentioned Jason’s name.
His absence did not control the room.
At lunch, a server placed a chair behind Margaret.
She glanced at it, then at Isabella.
For a second, the old pain returned.
Isabella held the chair steady.
“You’re safe.”
Margaret sat.
“I know.”
