Chapter 8 - The Pulled Chair

The cruelty began during the family toast.

Evelyn seated Margaret at the farthest table near the service doors.

When Isabella moved her mother closer, Jason objected.

“That table is reserved for important guests.”

“My mother is important.”

Jason leaned toward her.

“Don’t start.”

Margaret attempted to leave quietly.

Isabella caught her arm.

“You’re staying.”

A server brought another chair.

Margaret lowered herself carefully because of an old hip injury.

Jason stepped behind her.

He looked toward Evelyn.

His mother gave the smallest nod.

Then Jason pulled the chair away.

Margaret crashed onto the marble.

Guests gasped.

Jason spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.

“Trash needs to know its place!”

Evelyn pointed toward the doors.

“Get out! You don’t belong here!”

Margaret’s eyes filled with shame.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered to Isabella. “I embarrassed you.”

That sentence ended the performance.

Isabella rose and ordered Jason to apologize.

He laughed.

She slapped him.

For the first time, the ballroom saw the rage behind Jason’s polished smile.

“You’ll regret that,” he whispered.

Isabella signaled toward the security camera above the ballroom doors.

“No, Jason.”

“You will.”

Helen and the attorneys entered.

Behind them came hotel security and Investigator Paul Ramirez.
