Chapter 21 - Margaret’s Testimony
The criminal trial began four months later.
Margaret took the witness stand wearing the same beige cardigan.
Reporters had suggested she wear something more impressive.
She refused.
“This is what I wore when they decided I had no value.”
She described Thomas’s theft, Evelyn’s manipulation, and the decades she spent protecting Isabella.
The defense attacked her.
“You abandoned one daughter and lied to another.”
Margaret did not look away.
“Yes.”
“Why should this jury believe you?”
“Because shame made me hide the truth before. I am done hiding it now.”
She admitted every mistake.
She did not pretend poverty made her virtuous.
She did not claim fear erased responsibility.
Her honesty weakened the defense more than perfection could have.
Then Isabella testified.
Jason’s attorney asked why she struck him at the christening.
“Because he knocked an injured woman to the floor and called her trash.”
“So you respond violently when emotional?”
“I responded once after years of documented coercion. He planned a fraudulent diagnosis before the incident occurred.”
Helen played the recording proving it.
Jason’s attorney went silent.
The prosecutor displayed the foreign flight records, forged reports, insurance applications, and kidnapping plan.
Jason stared at Isabella.
