Chapter 15 - The Courthouse Ambush

Isabella arrived at court surrounded by security.

Margaret remained at the hotel with Noah in a protected suite.

At least, that was the plan.

Moments before the hearing, Isabella’s phone rang.

The hotel nurse sounded terrified.

“Mrs. Cross, your mother is missing.”

Isabella stopped walking.

“What?”

“She received a call and left the suite. Noah is safe with me.”

Security footage showed Margaret entering a service elevator alone.

A man in a maintenance uniform waited inside.

His face was partially hidden.

But Isabella recognized the way he stood.

Thomas.

He had called Margaret and lured her away.

A text arrived from Margaret’s phone.

Withdraw the charges against Jason and Evelyn. Transfer control to Noah’s temporary guardian. Come alone.

Helen read the message.

“It’s a trap.”

“He has my mother.”

“And he wants you to sign guardianship papers.”

Jason’s attorneys entered the courtroom smiling.

They believed Isabella would not appear.

The judge took the bench.

Helen requested a brief delay and explained the emergency privately.

The judge immediately authorized police intervention and sealed the courtroom.

Ramirez traced Margaret’s phone to a parking structure three blocks away.

Isabella insisted on going.

“You are his target,” Ramirez said.

“That’s why he’ll answer me.”

They reached the garage.

Margaret’s cardigan lay on the concrete beside an empty wheelchair.
