Chapter 2 - The Sealed Files

The attorneys walked directly toward Isabella.

Jason’s anger shifted into confusion.

His business partner, Andrew Keller, rose from a nearby table.

“What is this?”

The oldest attorney, Helen Ward, placed a black folder on the christening gift table.

“Mrs. Isabella Cross requested that these documents be delivered personally.”

Jason’s eyes narrowed.

“My wife doesn’t make business requests without me.”

Helen looked at him coolly.

“She did not make them as your wife.”

Isabella handed Noah to a trusted nurse who had attended the christening.

Then she helped Margaret into a chair.

Jason moved toward the folder.

Helen blocked him.

“These papers are addressed to the controlling beneficiary of the Cross-Fairmont Family Trust.”

Evelyn gave a dismissive laugh.

“That would be my son.”

Helen opened the first envelope.

“No.”

Every guest seemed to stop breathing.

“The controlling beneficiary is Isabella.”

Jason stared at his wife.

“That’s impossible.”

Isabella looked down at Margaret’s trembling hands.

“My mother didn’t come here asking for charity.”

She turned back to him.

“She came because the ballroom, the hotel, and the company paying for this reception all belong to her family trust.”

Evelyn gripped the back of a chair.

“You said Margaret was a housekeeper.”

Jason looked at Isabella with sudden panic.

Helen removed a certified ownership document.
