Chapter 13 - The School Parking Lot

Two days later, Gavin arrived at the twins’ school before dismissal.

The custody order had not yet reached the substitute office administrator. He signed Nolan and Parker out and drove away.

My phone rang as I pulled into the parking lot.

“Dad says we’re going on a trip,” Nolan whispered.

Behind him, Gavin ordered him to hang up.

I kept my voice steady. “Look outside. Tell me what you see.”

“A bridge. Water. A big red sign.”

Police traced Gavin’s vehicle toward the Bay Bridge. He was not taking them on vacation. His passport and two one-way tickets to the Cayman Islands had been found missing from his safe.

I called him.

“Bring them back.”

“Withdraw your claims,” he said. “Tell the judge the documents are fake.”
