Chapter 6 - The Missing Archive

The replacement file contained polished PDFs, new signatures, and a story in which Gavin had founded everything alone.
But the state database showed an older file number.
My attorney, Elena Shaw, requested the original. The clerk said it had been archived after a scanning error and could not be located.
Two days later, someone broke into my car.
Nothing valuable was taken. Only a notebook containing the name of the filing attorney and the archive number.
Gavin called that evening.
“You should stop digging,” he said.
“Is that a threat?”
“It’s advice. Think about the boys.”
His voice was calm, which frightened me more than shouting would have.
I wrote down every word and sent it to Elena. She warned me not to confront him again.
Then, at 11:43 p.m., an unknown number texted me a photograph of a dusty cardboard box.
