Chapter 14 - Nolan’s Trail

Nolan remembered the emergency feature on his smartwatch.

Every few minutes, he pressed the side button beneath his blazer sleeve. The device sent location pings to my phone.

Gavin drove east, then abruptly turned north when police units approached the bridge.

The signal stopped near an abandoned marina.

I arrived behind the officers and saw Gavin standing beside a charter boat, one arm around each boy.

He was not holding a weapon. He did not need one. The terror on the twins’ faces was enough.

“Tell them to back away,” he shouted.

I walked forward before anyone could stop me.

“You wanted me here. I’m here.”

He demanded a recorded confession that I had fabricated every claim.

I raised my phone.

Then Nolan twisted free and ran toward me. Parker followed.
