Chapter 22 - The Last Lie

I agreed to meet Gavin only in a monitored conference room.

He looked smaller without his tailored confidence.

“Your father didn’t leave that money to you,” he said. “He invested it through me. The company was always supposed to be mine.”

He slid a photocopied letter across the table.

For a second, the signature looked real.

Then I noticed the date.

My father had been hospitalized and unable to write that week.

Gavin smiled. “Withdraw your testimony and I’ll give the boys their trust back.”

“The government already froze the account.”

His smile faltered.

The letter was another forgery. But it contained a phrase my father often used in private: Build something worth leaving behind.

Only three people had heard him say it.
