Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Red Dress

Sloane joined the company as a branding consultant.
She was polished, charming, and always available when Gavin claimed a meeting ran late. At first she treated me with bright, careful kindness.
Then she started sitting in my chair.
At a holiday dinner, she raised a glass and called Gavin “the sole visionary behind the company.” The room applauded. Gavin did not correct her.
Afterward, I asked him why.
“You’re being insecure,” he said. “You chose motherhood. Don’t punish me for continuing to work.”
I had not chosen to disappear. He had removed me one password, one meeting, one document at a time.
Three months later, I found a hotel invoice in his jacket. Sloane’s name appeared beside his on the reservation.
When I confronted him, he did not apologize.
