Chapter 25 - The Boy Who Spoke
Nolan wanted to testify at Gavin’s sentencing hearing.
I worried it would hurt him. A child therapist evaluated both boys and said Nolan understood his choice.
He stood before the court in his navy blazer, hands trembling at his sides.
“My dad told us Mom was stealing from us,” he said. “Then he took us from school and said Mom had to lie or we couldn’t go home.”
Gavin lowered his head.
Nolan continued. “I still love my dad. But loving someone doesn’t mean saying what they did was okay.”
Parker sat beside me, crying silently.
Judge Beckett thanked Nolan and ordered a break.
In the hallway, Gavin asked to see the boys.
They agreed only if a counselor remained present.
He apologized, but Nolan did not hug him.
