Chapter 12 - The Emergency Hearing
Marcus arrived at court in a navy suit, carrying photographs of Rebecca’s motel room.
His attorney described her as unstable, impulsive, and homeless.
Rebecca listened without interrupting.
Judge Elena Vargas studied the filings.
“Mrs. Cole removed three children from the marital residence without a court order.”
Maya stood.
“She fled domestic violence.”
Marcus shook his head sadly.
“No police reports exist before this week.”
Rebecca wanted to scream.
Instead she let Maya present the bruising photographs, the threatening note, and Teresa’s incident report.
Marcus’s attorney attacked every piece.
“Anyone could have written the note.”
“Mrs. Cole could have sustained those bruises elsewhere.”
Then Claire entered as Marcus’s witness.
Rebecca’s sister avoided her eyes.
Under oath, Claire said Rebecca had always been emotionally unpredictable.
Maya approached.
“Did Marcus Cole pay you twenty thousand dollars?”
Claire’s head snapped up.
“No.”
Maya played the recorded phone call.
Claire’s own voice filled the courtroom.
“It wasn’t like that.”
“How much?”
“Twenty thousand.”
The judge’s expression turned cold.
Claire began crying.
Marcus stared at her with open fury.
The emergency custody request was denied.
Temporary protection was granted to Rebecca and the children.
But as court adjourned, Marcus leaned toward Claire.
“You just ruined everything.”
