Chapter 19 - The Birth Certificate
Rebecca’s mother arrived at Maya’s office carrying a sealed envelope.
“I should have told you long ago.”
Inside was Rebecca’s original birth certificate.
The father’s name was not Richard Bennett.
It was Jonathan Hart.
Rebecca recognized the surname.
Her grandmother’s youngest son.
The uncle she had been told died before she was born.
“He was my father?”
Her mother nodded.
“Jonathan and I were young. Richard married me after Jonathan disappeared.”
“Disappeared?”
“He left after an argument with your grandmother. We later heard he died overseas.”
“Did Richard know?”
“Yes.”
Rebecca suddenly understood the distance she had always felt from the man she called Dad.
He had raised her—but resented the inheritance tied to her biological family.
“Grandma left me the trust because I was Jonathan’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
“Why hide it?”
“Richard wanted you to be a Bennett.”
“No. He wanted my money to become Bennett money.”
Her mother wept.
“I loved him. I kept choosing peace.”
“You kept choosing silence.”
Maya examined a second document.
A notarized letter from Jonathan Hart, sent only five years earlier.
He was alive.
He had been searching for Rebecca.
Her mother had hidden the letter after Richard threatened to leave.
Rebecca read the final line.
I never stopped looking for my daughter.
A phone number was written beneath it.
Her hands shook as she dialed.
A man answered on the second ring.
