Chapter 27 - Her Mother at the Door

Six months after the rainy night, Rebecca’s mother stood outside the temporary rental.

She carried no suitcase.

No excuses.

Rebecca opened the door but did not invite her inside.

“I left Richard,” her mother said.

“He’s in jail.”

“I should have left years ago.”

“Yes.”

“I am cooperating with prosecutors.”

“That is your responsibility.”

Her mother nodded.

“I know.”

For the first time, she did not cry to soften Rebecca.

She simply stood there.

“I brought the children’s photographs. The ones from your childhood too.”

Rebecca accepted the box.

Her mother looked toward the living room, where Grace was laughing.

“May I see them?”

“No.”

The answer hurt them both.

But Rebecca did not change it.

“Not today.”

Her mother lowered her head.

“I understand.”

“You didn’t protect us.”

“I know.”

“If you become part of their lives again, it will happen slowly. With counseling. With their consent.”

“I’ll do whatever they need.”

Rebecca studied her.

“Then start by respecting no.”

Her mother stepped back.

“Goodbye, Rebecca.”

“Goodbye, Mom.”

It was not reconciliation.

But it was the first boundary her mother accepted without manipulation.

Weeks later, Lily chose to exchange letters with her grandmother.

Ethan was not ready.

Grace barely remembered her.

Rebecca allowed each child to choose.

👉 Healing did not bring the old family back—but it was creating a new one built on consent instead of fear.
