Chapter 26 - Richard’s Apology
Rebecca met Richard in a monitored room.
He did not call himself her father.
He did not ask for forgiveness.
“I resented you,” he said.
The honesty hurt more than denial.
“You looked like Jonathan. Evelyn trusted you. Your mother loved you out of guilt. I told myself the money should support the family I built.”
“So you stole it.”
“Yes.”
“You brought Marcus into my life.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the lake.”
Richard’s eyes filled with shame.
“I knew he wanted control. I refused to ask how.”
“That is not innocence.”
“I know.”
“Why did you close the door?”
“Because seeing you there meant every lie had reached my porch.”
Rebecca felt tears rise but did not let them control her voice.
“You left three children in the rain to protect yourself from shame.”
“Yes.”
He slid a handwritten statement across the table.
A full confession.
No bargaining language.
No request for reduced charges.
“I signed this for the prosecutor.”
“Why now?”
“Because you were right. I kept calling cowardice protection.”
Rebecca stood.
Richard looked up.
“Will you tell the children I’m sorry?”
“No.”
His face fell.
“You will tell them yourself someday, if they choose to hear you.”
Rebecca walked away carrying no promise of forgiveness.
