Chapter 6 - The Inheritance
The document claimed Rebecca had transferred control of a $2.4 million inheritance to Marcus.
Rebecca stared at the screen.
Her grandmother, Evelyn Hart, had died when Rebecca was twenty-five.
The family told her the estate had been consumed by medical debt and taxes.
Her father had handled everything.
Marcus had been a junior accountant then.
That was how they met.
Angela sat beside her.
“Did you know about this money?”
“No.”
Rebecca opened another file.
A trust account bearing her name had been drained through twelve transfers.
The final transfer went to Bennett Development Group.
Her brother Daniel’s company.
Rebecca’s hands began shaking.
Marcus had stolen from her.
But he had not acted alone.
A spreadsheet listed payments to Daniel, Claire, and an account marked R. Bennett Senior.
Her father.
The same man who had closed the door on his grandchildren.
Angela whispered, “You need a lawyer.”
Rebecca saved copies to a secure cloud folder.
Then she noticed the file creation date.
Three days before her wedding.
Marcus had married her after the fraud had already begun.
Her entire marriage had been built around access to her money.
A final folder was password-protected.
Its title read: PHASE TWO—CUSTODY AND CAPACITY.
Rebecca felt suddenly cold.
Marcus had prepared something involving her children and her mental health.
Before she could open it, the laptop screen went black.
