Chapter 7 - The Broken Window
Angela ordered everyone away from the windows.
A crash echoed from the rear office.
Glass shattered across the floor.
The children woke screaming.
Rebecca ran toward their room as shelter staff called police.
A shadow moved outside the broken window.
Then disappeared.
Nothing was stolen.
But a folded note lay beneath the shattered glass.
Rebecca opened it with trembling fingers.
COME HOME BEFORE THE COURT TAKES THEM.
Marcus’s words.
His control had followed her into the one place meant to protect her.
Officer Teresa Monroe arrived within minutes.
She photographed the note and glass.
“This is intimidation.”
“Can you prove Marcus sent it?”
“Not yet.”
Rebecca showed her the flash-drive files.
Teresa’s eyes narrowed.
“These look like financial crimes.”
“My family’s involved.”
“Then don’t contact them.”
Rebecca almost laughed.
“They already chose him.”
The shelter relocated Rebecca and the children to a confidential motel used for emergency cases.
Before they left, Teresa handed Rebecca a card.
“Call Detective Samuel Price. He handles financial abuse and coercive control.”
In the motel bathroom, Rebecca finally managed to open PHASE TWO.
Inside were medical forms declaring her unstable.
A draft psychiatric evaluation.
A petition requesting full custody for Marcus.
And a signed witness statement from Claire.
