The signature belonged to Dr. Amelia Bennett.
Daniel’s wife.
Rebecca felt another betrayal crack open.
Amelia met with investigators voluntarily.
She appeared exhausted.
“I didn’t sign that certificate.”
“Your signature is on it,” Price said.
“Daniel had access to my electronic signature at the clinic.”
Rebecca stared at her sister-in-law.
“Did you know he used it?”
“Not then.”
“When did you find out?”
“Two years ago.”
“And you stayed silent?”
Amelia looked ashamed.
“Daniel said reporting it would destroy the business and send your father to prison.”
“So you protected them.”
“I was afraid.”
Rebecca’s voice remained calm.
“So was I. I still walked out.”
Amelia began to cry.
She offered records showing Daniel had created false invoices through her medical practice.
Money from Rebecca’s trust was disguised as consulting expenses.
She also had a voicemail from Marcus threatening Daniel.
In the recording, Marcus said, “The lake solves the Rebecca problem. After that, Lily’s account becomes controllable.”
Rebecca went completely still.
The lake trip had not been an accident waiting to happen.
It had been a plan.
Price immediately expanded the criminal investigation.
Daniel was arrested for fraud and conspiracy.
Rebecca’s father turned himself in later that day.
Her mother called from the courthouse steps.
“Please don’t let them take your father away.”
