Chapter 8 - Claire’s Confession

Rebecca called Claire from a blocked number.

Her sister answered on the fourth ring.

“What do you want?”

“Why did you sign a statement saying I’m unstable?”

Silence.

Then Claire lowered her voice.

“Marcus said you were having episodes.”

“What episodes?”

“He showed us messages.”

“I never sent them.”

“He said you threatened the kids.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“Claire, he beat me.”

Another pause.

“You always exaggerate.”

“Did he pay you?”

Claire inhaled sharply.

That was enough.

“How much?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“How much?”

“Twenty thousand.”

Rebecca’s knees weakened.

Claire rushed to explain.

“Daniel’s business was struggling. Dad said the money was technically from the family trust.”

“My trust.”

Claire stopped speaking.

“You knew?”

“I knew Grandma left something. Dad said you couldn’t manage it.”

Rebecca’s grief hardened into something cleaner.

Anger.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because you were always emotional.”

“No, Claire. I was trusting.”

Rebecca recorded the entire call.

Before hanging up, Claire whispered, “You should bring the kids back. Marcus says he’ll forgive you.”

Rebecca looked through the motel doorway at her sleeping children.

“He doesn’t get to forgive me.”

She ended the call.

Seconds later, a text arrived from Daniel.
