Chapter 28 - The Sentences
The courtroom filled for sentencing.
Marcus received twenty-two years for conspiracy, financial crimes, insurance fraud, domestic violence, and obstruction.
Victor Hale received twelve years and lost his law license.
Daniel received six years with restitution requirements.
Claire received eighteen months, followed by probation and community service, after her cooperation.
Richard received eleven years.
Rebecca listened as each sentence was read.
She felt no triumph.
Only finality.
Marcus requested to address her.
The judge allowed it.
“You destroyed my life,” he said.
The courtroom went still.
Rebecca stood.
“No. I stopped you from destroying ours.”
Marcus looked toward the children, but Lily turned away.
Claire cried quietly.
Daniel stared at the floor.
Richard closed his eyes.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Rebecca.
“Do you feel justice was served?”
She looked at Lily, Ethan, and Grace.
“Justice is not a number of years. It is knowing my children will never be used as leverage again.”
“Do you forgive them?”
Rebecca answered carefully.
“I no longer need hatred to protect myself. That is enough for today.”
Then she walked away with her children.
No one blocked the door.
