Chapter 21 - The Lake Plan
Marcus’s evidence included emails between himself and Richard Bennett.
One message from Richard read:
Rebecca and Lily will attend. The younger two stay here. Afterward, we claim grief caused instability.
Rebecca read it twice.
The man who raised her had known.
Perhaps he had not planned the mechanics.
But he had accepted the result.
Maya sat beside her.
“You don’t have to attend the plea hearing.”
“Yes, I do.”
In court, Marcus looked thinner.
His confidence was gone, but not his instinct for manipulation.
He turned toward Rebecca.
“I did love you.”
She stared at him.
“You insured me for five million dollars.”
“I was under pressure.”
“You beat me.”
“I lost control.”
“You planned to kill me.”
His attorney objected.
The judge silenced him.
Marcus offered full cooperation in exchange for a reduced sentence.
He implicated Daniel, Richard, and Victor Hale.
He admitted the custody petition had been designed to isolate Rebecca before the lake trip.
He admitted targeting her because of the trust.
Then he said one final thing.
“Claire knew about the lake.”
Rebecca’s head turned.
Claire sat behind Maya, shaking violently.
“No,” she whispered.
Marcus smiled faintly.
“You told me Rebecca always drove after taking sleeping pills.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Rebecca remembered Claire bringing her herbal sleep medication two weeks before the planned trip.
The betrayal was no longer abstract.
