Chapter 15 - The Insurance Policies

Detective Price obtained a warrant for Marcus’s office.

Inside the safe, investigators found copies of forged trust documents, secret recordings, and three life-insurance policies.

One for Rebecca.

One for Lily.

One for Marcus’s business partner.

None for Ethan or Grace.

Rebecca stared at the policy values.

Her life was insured for $5 million.

Lily’s for $3 million.

Marcus was the beneficiary of both.

“The policies were increased last month,” Price said.

The same month Rebecca began talking about divorce.

Maya’s expression was grim.

“This changes the case.”

“Do you think he planned to kill us?”

“We don’t assume. We investigate.”

Rebecca remembered Marcus insisting she and Lily attend a weekend retreat at a lake property.

The trip was scheduled for the following week.

He had told her Ethan and Grace should stay with her parents.

Her father had agreed too quickly.

Price asked, “Who owned the lake house?”

“Daniel’s company.”

The room went silent.

Rebecca felt her knees weaken.

The fraud had been about money.

But the insurance suggested something worse.

Officers arrested Marcus on financial charges before he could leave the state.

Daniel was questioned.

Rebecca’s father hired a criminal attorney.

Her mother stopped answering calls.

That evening, Lily found Rebecca crying in the kitchen of their temporary apartment.

“Are we safe now?”

Rebecca wiped her face.

“We’re safer.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Rebecca held her daughter’s hands.

“I’m going to make sure no one controls our lives again.”

A loud knock shook the door.

👉 Marcus was in custody, yet someone had still come to Rebecca’s new address after midnight.
