Chapter 22 - Claire’s Choice
Claire confessed in a private interview.
Marcus had asked whether Rebecca still struggled to sleep.
Claire gave him the name of a prescription Rebecca had once used.
Then she delivered a sealed bottle Marcus claimed was for anxiety.
“I didn’t know what he would do.”
“You knew he wanted me sedated.”
“I thought he wanted you calm during the divorce.”
Rebecca stared at her sister.
“You always find words that make cruelty sound smaller.”
Claire began sobbing.
“I wanted your life.”
“My life was a cage.”
“I know that now.”
“No. You know it because the cage caught you too.”
Claire agreed to testify against Marcus and Richard.
She also surrendered the remaining money she had received.
Prosecutors charged her with perjury and conspiracy but recommended leniency for cooperation.
Rebecca did not ask for mercy.
She did not ask for vengeance.
She simply asked that the truth remain complete.
Outside the courthouse, Claire called after her.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Rebecca stopped.
“Forgiveness is not the same as trust.”
“Is that a no?”
“It’s an honest answer.”
That evening, Lily asked whether Aunt Claire would go to jail.
“Maybe.”
“Do you want her to?”
Rebecca considered the question.
“I want her to understand that saying sorry does not erase what she chose.”
Lily nodded.
Then she handed Rebecca a school assignment titled MY FAMILY.
