Chapter 20 - The Father Who Waited

Jonathan Hart lived in Maine and worked as a boatbuilder.

He flew to Columbus the next morning.

Rebecca recognized him before he spoke.

She saw her own eyes in his face.

He stopped several feet away, afraid to come closer.

“I don’t know what you were told.”

“That you were dead.”

His expression collapsed.

“I wrote every year.”

“My mother hid the letters.”

“I came once when you were six. Richard threatened to have me arrested.”

Rebecca remembered a man watching her school recital from the back row.

A memory she had dismissed as imagination.

“That was you.”

Jonathan nodded.

“I thought staying away would keep your life stable.”

“It didn’t.”

“I know.”

He did not ask for forgiveness.

He did not demand a place in her life.

He simply gave her a box containing copies of every letter he had sent, photographs of her grandmother, and a college fund he had built in Rebecca’s name.

“I never touched it,” he said. “It’s not enough to repair anything.”

Rebecca looked at Lily, Ethan, and Grace standing nearby.

“No money repairs this.”

“I know.”

“But showing up might.”

Jonathan’s eyes filled.

Grace approached first.

“Are you my grandpa?”

He knelt.

“I hope I can earn that name.”

For the first time since the rain-soaked night, Rebecca felt something other than survival.

She felt the beginning of a future.

Then Maya called.

Marcus wanted a plea deal.

In exchange, he offered evidence proving Richard Bennett had planned the lake “accident.”

👉 Rebecca’s husband had designed the crime—but her father had known exactly what was supposed to happen at the lake.
