Chapter 25 - The Hart Farm

The Hart farm covered 140 acres near a rapidly growing medical district.
Richard had tried to sell it twice using forged authority.
Both sales failed because Evelyn’s original deed required Rebecca’s personal signature after age thirty.
The land still belonged to her.
Developers valued it at more than $12 million.
Rebecca stood at the edge of the property with her children.
Tall grass moved in the wind.
An old white farmhouse leaned beneath a maple tree.
“This is ours?” Ethan asked.
“It belongs to the Hart trust.”
Lily looked worried.
“Are we rich now?”
Rebecca smiled gently.
“We’re safe. That matters more.”
She refused immediate offers to sell.
Instead, she partnered with a nonprofit to develop part of the land into transitional housing for women and children leaving abusive homes.
The remainder would fund the children’s education and preserve the family farm.
Jonathan offered to restore the farmhouse.
Grace chose the color of the kitchen.
Yellow.
“Because yellow feels like somebody opened the curtains,” she said.
News of the project spread.
Reporters asked Rebecca whether it was revenge.
“No,” she answered. “Revenge keeps pain alive. This is repair.”
Across town, her father watched the interview from jail while awaiting trial.
