The court appointed a child advocate to interview Nolan—no, Lily, Ethan, and Grace separately.
Marcus’s attorneys had argued Rebecca coached them.
The interviews proved otherwise.
Lily described nights when Marcus yelled through locked doors.
Ethan described hiding the flash drive after seeing Marcus shove Rebecca.
Grace said, “Daddy made Mommy cry quietly.”
The child advocate recommended sole legal and physical custody for Rebecca.
Marcus received supervised visitation only if approved after criminal sentencing and therapy.
When Rebecca told the children, Ethan looked relieved.
“Does that mean he can’t come take us?”
“Yes.”
Grace climbed into Rebecca’s lap.
Lily remained silent.
“What are you thinking?” Rebecca asked.
“I’m angry that everyone waited until we had proof.”
Rebecca understood.
People wanted bruises.
Recordings.
Bank transfers.
Threatening notes.
They had not believed fear by itself.
“You should never have needed to prove your pain to people who loved you,” Rebecca said.
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Neither should you.”
They held each other until the anger softened into grief.
Jonathan began joining them for Sunday dinners.
He never pushed.
He listened to the children’s stories and repaired Ethan’s broken dinosaur lamp.
