Chapter 2 - The Flash Drive

The old sedan smelled like wet clothes and fear.

Rebecca turned the heater on, but only cold air came through the vents.

Grace shivered in the back seat.

Lily wrapped her own jacket around her little sister.

“Mom,” Ethan whispered.

Rebecca looked at him through the rearview mirror.

He slowly unfolded his dinosaur blanket.

A small black flash drive dropped into his palm.

Rebecca’s breathing stopped.

“Where did you get that?”

“Dad put it in the kitchen drawer.”

Her husband, Marcus, had spent the past year guarding that drawer like it contained gold.

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“He was yelling at you. I thought it might help.”

Rebecca remembered Marcus slamming her against the refrigerator after accusing her of searching through his office.

He had whispered into her ear, “You leave me, you leave with nothing.”

Now his secret sat in her eight-year-old son’s hand.

Rebecca reached for it.

Then headlights flooded the rear window.

A dark SUV had turned onto the street behind them.

The same SUV Marcus’s business partner drove.

Rebecca started the engine.

The SUV stopped twenty feet away.
