Chapter 17 - Evelyn’s Voice
Rebecca listened to her grandmother’s voice through headphones.
The recording was dated three weeks before Evelyn Hart died.
“If Rebecca hears this, then someone ignored my instructions.”
Rebecca gripped the table.
Her grandmother sounded weak but clear.
“I am leaving the majority of my estate to Rebecca because she has compassion without weakness. Her father loves his children, but fear makes him dishonest.”
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“Richard has borrowed money from the trust. He promised to return it. I do not believe he will.”
Rebecca’s father had begun stealing before Evelyn’s death.
The message continued.
“I have asked attorney Jonathan Reed to place protective controls on the estate. No spouse may access the principal without Rebecca’s independent consent.”
Maya stopped the recording.
“The documents Marcus filed removed those protections.”
They resumed.
“If Richard introduces Rebecca to anyone connected to his financial advisers, she should be cautious. Especially a young accountant named Marcus Cole.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Her grandmother had seen him coming.
The recording ended with a message to Rebecca.
“You are not responsible for saving everyone who refuses to save themselves.”
Rebecca cried then.
Not from defeat.
From the relief of hearing someone speak the truth she had needed all her life.
Detective Price located Jonathan Reed, now retired in Arizona.
He confirmed Evelyn’s instructions.
He also revealed that her father had reported Rebecca as mentally unfit shortly after the funeral.
Rebecca had never been evaluated.
